Fairview Health Services has been selected by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to participate in the Next Generation Accountable Care Organization (ACO) Model.

As a Next Generation ACO, Fairview Health Network, a group of Fairview-employed and independent providers, hospitals and other care team members, will work with CMS to provide coordinated, high-quality care for Medicare beneficiaries at lower costs.

“For the past five years, Fairview Health Network has participated in the Pioneer ACO Model, a CMS initiative through which we were accountable for managing the health of more than 13,000 Medicare beneficiaries. We had positive results, and we want to build on our experience. The Next Generation ACO Model provides an excellent opportunity for us to continue to innovate and improve,” said Beth Thomas, DO, Fairview interim chief medical officer.

Quality is key

Next Generation ACOs will play an important role in moving the Medicare program—and the health care system at large—toward paying providers based on the quality rather than the quantity of care they provide to patients.

CMS uses robust quality measures and other criteria to reward Next Generation ACOs for providing Medicare beneficiaries with a positive patient experience and better health outcomes, while also rewarding them for reducing costs.

“By reducing regulatory burden and paying for quality, CMS is offering solutions that improve the quality of services our beneficiaries receive and reduce costs to help ensure the Medicare program is sustainable for generations to come,” said CMS Acting Administrator Andy Slavitt.
